TASK 1: Project Proposal

Contextual Research

After forming our group we started researching on True XR like the glasses that will be mentioned and used throughout this whole semester and also tried to look for various case studies to proof that MR and AR can improve the experience in museum exhibitions.

After that we discussed on what to further discover and distributed the parts and I chose to work on the immersion features, I did some research on the immersion features that can be included in the exhibition and I personally think spatial audio is the coolest and the one with most fun I think using Spatial Audio enhances the user immersion and introduction in activities like WarisanXR. When used in learning or entertainment, spatial audio seems to increase user interest by making the environment more alive and engaging.

Fig 1.3 Contextual Research on Immersion Features

After that we have a meeting with Justin who is the CEO of TrueXR and we got our chance to ask him our questions regarding the project.

Fig 1.4 TrueXR Meeting Summary

When we are done with the meeting we started survey trying to gain insights from their perspective on how to manage and run the exhibition.

The survey was sent out using social media such as Instagram or Facebook Groups and also known contacts, the survey collected 100 responses and analyzed the collected data such as below.

Fig 1.5 Survey Analysis

Following the data collected from the survey analysis we started to create our survey questions and our own user persona but to be more precise we decided to look more into detail and have more research thus we ran upon this data and statistics that the Muzium Negara have and we created our persona based on that demographic.

Fig 1.6 Muzium Negara Demographic

So based on the data we got from the contextual research we decided that our user persona will be Local, China, Singaporean and Indonesian.

We created few user persona as shown in Fig 1.7 and showed Mr. Mike and were told that our user personas are too specific we should generalize them so we simplified them and Fig 1.8 is our main personas after making amendments.

Fig 1.7 User Persona - Before Feedback

Fig 1.8, Final User Persona

When we are done with the surveys, user personas and analyzing we started to work on the insights discovery which leads to the problem statement and how might we. As mentioned by Mr. Mike this is our core so we need to remember it all the time solve problems and create ideas surrounding all these.

Fig 1.9 Insights, Problem Statement, How might we.

After all that we got a visit from Justin so that we can try out the AR glasses that will be used throughout the whole experience and see how it actually works and feel, and later that week we went to the Muzium Negara to get a gist of how the layout and space would actually look like.

Fig 1.10, Muzium Negara Layout

After that we began by brainstorming ideas centered around Malaysian heritage, using existing WarisanXR assets as inspiration. From these initial concepts, we refined and selected the ones that would be most engaging and educational for audiences. After finalizing the core ideas, we sketched designs and mapped out a content flow to visualize the experience. Some reference images were unavailable during the process, but the focus remained on creating an impactful representation of cultural heritage.

Fig 2.0 Content Design

While I'm working on the content design Joey came up with some marketing ideas which are seperated into few sections and with these ideas it could help promote the experience Warisan XR wants to sell to their target audience.

Fig 2.1 Marketing Ideas

Johnny came up with some physical ideas for the stations too so that the users get to interact with something rather then just looking at the AR's.

Fig 2.2 Physical Design Ideas

And Ian did the art direction ideas, he collected various styles that he think suitable for the exhibition and there are a few interesting style that I myself are quite interested in. The ones on the left are the initial ideas that Ian have and the ones on the right are the ones that are picked after the feedback.

We also had a small voting session where all of us vote for the theme that we think it vibes with the vintage feel and also we liked the most.

Fig 2.3 Art Direction Ideas

So after the voting session we compiled our final art direction with the color palette that is approved by Mr. Mike to get a rough idea on where we stand and where we should go.
Fig 2.4 Final Art Direction

After all that we were told to create a storyline or a theme that matches with our ideas and it needs to be related throughout the whole exhibition journey so that the contents flow will feel related and not just something that is simply thrown in to fill in the gaps.

So we discussed pretty hard in class on what sort of theme or storyline do we really want or need, and Joey came up with a magnificent idea on having the exhibition focusing on celebrating Malaysia's cultural heritage. After we got our storyline we went to Mr. Mike for clarification and to make sure that everything connects.

Fig 2.5 Storyline

After the idea was approved by Mr. Mike I started to work on the UI design that will be used for the glasses, the wireframes are created for us to better visualize the layouts and placement as well as how it looks.

Fig 2.6 UI design

We've also chosen our typography and finalized our color palette at this point of the project below are the typography and color palette.

Fig2.7 Color palette & Image Reference

Fig 2.8 Typography

At this point we are at the end of our preparation for the proposal there's only one more thing we need to do which is the user journey map for each of the stations showing how's the experience of each station.

Fig 2.9 User journey maps for stations

So on Week 8 the night before the presentation we had a meeting all of us stayed up late on call to finish up our storyboard and prepare for the next day presentation.

Fig 2.10 Final Proposal Presentation

Fig 3.0 Story Boarding

After the presentation we got our feedback from TrueXR and we get to know how our client thinks differently from our perspective and started to refine our ideas based on the feedbacks we've gotten from them.

Fig 3.1 Floor plan transformation

So throughout the whole project Reema is the one who is in charged of the floor plan and she worked on it for few times to get the best solutions and best layout for the users to have a better experience at the final floorplan Reema included a queuing spot, photobooth and collection area everything is mentioned in the final floorplan below.

Fig 3.2 Final Floorplan

Since the initial color palette chose for the proposal didn't really click so we went and refine the color palette and make it less neon as mentioned by TrueXR during the presentation. The final art direction is created by observing more earthly colors that gives off the heritage vibes.

Fig 3.3 Final Art Direction

And as mentioned by TrueXR and Mr. Mike including gamification into the exhibition would make the experience more interesting so we've also included the gamification into our storyline.

Fig 3.4 Final Storyline

We've also came up with gestures that we think are simple as TrueXR mentioned to keep it as simple as possible so we've only got Tap, pinch to zoom in/out, 2 finger rotations and swipe left or right.

As for the content stations we took back our own parts following the previous proposal task, we came up with our own contents, gather 3D assets and did some sketch to show how the stations would look like.

Fig 3.5 Station 1

Fig 3.6 Station 2

Fig 3.7 Station 3

Fig 3.8 Station 4

Fig 3.9 Station 5

After the content we've also worked on the UI, I initially worked on something more modern but throughout the process I noticed that something more vintage would suit the whole theme more. So I made changes and got the idea of having the UI looking like a post card and stamp so that it gives off more nostalgic vibes and suits the theme of 1970s+ more and it would be more interesting the just having some modern glowing box.

Fig 3.10 Initial UI design

But after I'm done with the UI I didn't get to confirm with my group as I changed some of the UI's layout so it caused them quite a bit of problem and after they went for consultation changes are made like having center views and lesser works cause there a limit for it.

Fig 4.0 Final UI design

and we were also told to create some easy sketch for the base of the key visuals for each station so we need to touch up on the sketch, upgrade and update till its good enough then we can apply the same idea onto the other stations so that there is consistency.

Fig 4.1 Key Visual Sketches

After that Joey and Han worked on the Key visuals they made a lot of changes it was one hell of a ride I think they almost lost their minds doing the key visuals.

Fig 4.2 Key visual progress

And all these leads to the final presentation which is happening on 9th January 2025 (Thursday) all the final documents are linked on top and below.

REFLECTION

Week 1
As it’s the first week, we got briefed by Mr. Mike on what’s expected for the rest of the semester and gave us some explanation on three of the clients and also the projects. During the session we were told to form groups for our project. We focused on research of any component of the TrueXR project. We split the workload to ensure efficiency: For technologies,Johnny focused on that part, as for me I examined the immersion features, Samiha and Ian took part in the cultural elements, Joey looked at MR experiences in museums, Han was interested in what makes an immersive MR experience, and Reema distilled interview questions for the CEO. Everyone agreed to store all of our findings in a Google Doc/MIRO for future reading. We intended to also visit Muzium Negara to get a sense of the space for frame of reference but haven't really decided when to go

Week 2
In Week 2, we had an interview session with the CEO of TrueXR to learn more about the business itself, what they were trying to achieve, and dispel any questions we may have had about the project. Before we went to the meeting, we used to do some contextual research to understand what we were doing. In a document any unclear points from the brief were noted and addressed in the meeting later. Afterward, we focused on researching the target audience and identified three main personas, categorised by nationality: Chinese, local, Singaporean / Indonesian. Then I was to develop the Chinese user persona thereby leveraging the contextual research findings.

Week 3
Absent

Week 4
This week, our focus was on distributing and collecting survey responses after receiving approval. We aimed for 80 responses but managed to collect 100, reaching a point of saturation where additional responses no longer added new insights. Once the survey was closed, we divided tasks within the group to proceed effectively. My responsibility was to analyze the data and identify relevant patterns and trends to refine our user personas.

Week 5
In Week 5, we had the chance to test the TrueXR glasses, which gave us firsthand experience with the technology. While trying out the device, we noticed a few limitations, such as the relatively narrow field of view (FOV) and its reliance on an external device for functionality. Despite these constraints, exploring this new technology was an exciting opportunity that helped us better understand its potential. After the testing session, our group divided responsibilities, and I was tasked with brainstorming and developing content ideas for our project proposal.

Week 6
This week, we visited Muzium Negara to explore the potential venue for our exhibition and deepen our understanding of Malaysian history and culture. During the visit, I observed the museum's overall ambiance, the spatial layout, and how the exhibits were presented. These observations provided a clearer understanding of the space and how content is curated. Afterward, my team collaborated to brainstorm exhibition ideas, refine our problem statement, and develop "How Might We" (HMW) questions to ensure our project objectives were clear and achievable.

Week 7

This week, we had a consultation session to discuss our design ideas and art direction. We spent most of the time brainstorming a story to connect all the exhibition stations. Mr. Mike pointed out that our journey lacked flow and didn’t make sense. After refining the concept, I started working on slides to prepare for the client presentation in Week 8.

Week 9
During Week 8, I focused on completing the content designs, user journey maps and wireframes  while my teammates worked on other parts of the project. In Week 9, we presented our proposal to TrueXR. They provided valuable feedback, suggesting we reduce the neon cyberpunk style and include more heritage-inspired visuals. They also recommended balancing traditional and modern elements to engage younger audiences and storyboarding each station in detail, including screen designs and user persona alignment.

Week 10
This week, we consulted Mr. Mike about updates to our Miro board after the TrueXR presentation. He suggested adding gamification elements that align with the storyline and exhibition stations. He also stressed the importance of keeping the art direction and user gestures consistent across all stations to maintain flow and engagement.

Week 11

This week, our team focused on filtering content and creating rough sketches to visualize our storyboard. I worked on the arts and crafts station, creating digital sketches to show how the crafts could be displayed. During our consultation, Mr. Mike suggested layering the storyboard to reveal content step by step and advised us to fully develop one station as a key visual to guide the design of the others.

Week 12
This week, we finalized the art direction, choosing a Malaysian kampung retro style as the theme. Tasks were divided among team members, and I was assigned to design the User interface for the whole process.

Week 13

This week, we worked on developing the storyboard and refining the key visual for Station 4 - Food. With guidance from Mr. Mike, we resolved issues with perspective and the concept, improving the design. We also sketched and digitized visuals for the other four stations and created a to-do list for the final presentation. My tasks included designing promotional posters, wristbands, and the social media booth.

Week 14
This week, we finalized the key visuals and got them approved. The team completed all storyboard frames and station designs, ensuring everything was ready for the project. I finished the User interface design as well with joey’s help.
